Looking Back & Moving Forward

4 11 2008

400 years ago North America was the destination of choice for those escaping discrimination.

150 years ago it was legal to own human beings.

90 years ago it was illegal for women to vote.

60 years ago, there were separate drinking fountains for black people and white people.

45 years ago it was illegal for a white person to marry a non-white person.

Today there is actually a vote in California to overturn a Supreme Court decision and ban gay marriage.

In the past we realized that we were wrong and we moved forward with equality.

Will today be a step forward, or several steps back?

When you look back on history, which side do you want to be on?

I am and will always be on the side of EQUALITY. I am still finding it difficult to believe that my fellow Californians passed prop 8.
But the passage of 8 has brought solidarity to what may have been complacency. I am thrilled to see the call to action being met by the gay community and allies. I will fight for equality til the day I die, but I hope it won’t take that long….
